World War One Posters
Certain images and themes,
such as uniform or
equipment, were popular on
posters.
“If the cap fits” was a
commonplace expression
and used to urge men to
volunteer.
In 1914 social classes were
marked by their headgear.
The boater represents a
student or young man, the
straw hat for a man about
town, the top hat the upper or
professional classes and the
bowler or trilby for the
working man, so appealing to
men of all classes to enlist.
