Women were encouraged
to urge their men-folk to
volunteer. Whilst the
absence, and possible loss
of their men, would be
keenly felt, mothers, wives,
daughters and sisters were
expected to sanction their
going and to show a brave
face as they marched away.
Pressure was exerted
on prospective
volunteers by
suggesting that their
women-folk were under
threat from the enemy.
