Women were called to
assist in the care of
troops at the front, or at
home in the hospitals
and convalescent centres
springing up around
the country.
They were encouraged to
take on roles vacated by
the nation’s soldiers, so
went to work on the
land, in mines, in
factories as well as in
shops and offices as
never before.
They proved that they
were a match for the
demands of war time
economy and their
efforts were to be
eventually rewarded with
better rights
and freedoms.
