World War One Posters

              Maps were a regular

              feature on posters and

              this one implies that a

              man could virtually step

              across the Channel and

              join the fighting.

              Women-folk left at home

              were not immune to poster

              imagery. They too were

expected to do their bit for

              the war.

              The main expectation of

              women was to “keep the

              home fires burning” for when

              the men returned. They were

              also expected to economise

              as the effects of food

              shortages took their toll.

For those not able to do

              anything else this was

              considered an important

              help towards the war effort.
