     Neighbours on Well Street
           Prince, Rowett, and Nourish. Three of the 'lucky' families in
           Langham whose children returned from the war.
          Mr & Mrs Nourish
          lived at Hayes Farm
          with their four sons,
          Bill, Jack, Joe, and
          Tom. Joe joined the
          Army in 1914 but
          the others were
          doing essential
          agricultural work.
          Tom joined the
          Rutland Defence
          Volunteers and he
          was friends with
          Gladys Prince.

          corresponded with friends who had
          enlisted from Langham, and he received the letter below in 1915.
          Dear Tom
          Just a line or two hope it will find you quite well as it leaves me in the pink now you will think I am a
          long time writing to you. I am sending you one of my Photo but I don’t think it is a very good one and I
          want you to send me one of yours.
          I am pleased to say we are not having very hard drill now as we been having. I am going out in the draft
          to go to the old 5 which is in France me and some chap from Exton so we are be firing all last week and
          this but we have to go a little march once a week about 20 miles round with about fore stone on your back
          and a night march once a week. But here is one think we get some good food and there is somewhere to go
          at night, there is a lot of solderes down the town at night and some girls.
          I should like you to come over to Luton so as we can have a walk round for I go away. I have not been up a
          see your sister yet but I will go up before I come home again  I think I shall get home next week so I will go
          up and see her. but we have to be in at 10 clock at night and the lamp are not a light there is some game
          with the girls I tell you. I don’t think I have any more to tell you this time so I will bring my letter to a
          close remember me to Charlie Prince and your father.

          Tom's sister Edith was married and living in Luton with her family.
          The other girls referred to may be some of the thousands who were
          recruited to work in the munitions factories in the town during the war.
