Neighbours on Well Street
Prince, Rowett, and Nourish. Three of the 'lucky' families in
Langham whose children returned from the war.
July 30th - Joe came on leave.
Aug 3rd - Married
Aug 5th - Joe went back to France.
Joe had at last been given a week’s leave, three
days was taken up by travelling from and to
France. Both he and Lily were well aware of the
fragility of life in the circumstances and he had
been saving up his army pay, so he went to
Peterborough to obtain a Special Licence to
marry. Lily was still in mourning for Rose so the
best she could do was to buy a summer dress in
Oakham with a purple pattern and trim it and her After the Wedding
hat with purple ribbons.
They married in Langham church and went to Grantham for their
one-night honeymoon. The clock that her employer,
Mr Owen Smith, gave them for a wedding present is still in use.
Sept 18th - 21st - Jack came to see us, had a lovely time. Ivy was here for her holiday.
Sept 25th - Nance and her family arrived unexpectedly because of air raids.
Nov 3rd - Martha married.
Xmas Day - Went to church am., went to Joe’s mother’s for tea. Tom Hubbard was
there, stayed till 8pm.
New Years Day 1918 - Fox hounds met here went to the meet. Helped Mother
cut up pig, had my tea there - Olave on leave - A letter from Joe.
Jan 24th - Went to Boston for one night. [this was for a family funeral].
In early February Lily left work and rented a small house in Langham.
Feb 26th - Chips [Alfred Breakspear] on leave, came for tea.
Good Friday - All the Londoners spent Easter at Langham. Roy, Georgie and
myself had our tea with Nance.
April 28th - Memorial service for Chips.
Whit Tuesday - Jack came, went to Burley Woods.
June 20th - Went to Holbeach, started war work 24th June, came home 22nd July.
