The End of the War

The Guardians expressed their ‘thankfulness that the War had been brought to an

end … and that there was the prospect of a just and honourable peace.’ However, they

later wanted the ‘handing over of the ex-Kaiser for trial’ as ‘a grave menace’ to the

               Allied cause.

Schoolgirl Margaret Catchpole remembered hearing the church bells ringing.

‘The Armistice has been signed, the war is over,’ I was told. Jubilation everywhere!

Some days later … the school gathered in the playground ... I was a drummer. We walked

around the village … singing patriotic songs, then into the hall for a lovely tea.’

‘The Peace celebrations commenced … with some lovely music from the Church bells …

a procession… marched round the village, headed by … school children blowing

               various instruments.’

Later there was an open-air service, a cricket match, tea, sports and finally a free

               concert in the Institute.
